Curriculum Statement

The curriculum at Roby Park is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all children. It provides opportunities for children to develop as independent, confident and successful learners, with high aspirations, who know how to make a positive contribution to their community and the wider society.

The curriculum ensures that academic success, creativity and problem solving, reliability, responsibility and resilience, as well as physical development, well-being and mental health are key elements that support the development of the whole child and promote a positive attitude to learning.

The curriculum celebrates the diversity and utilises the skills, knowledge and cultural wealth of the community while supporting the children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, ensuring that children are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

Withdrawal Requests from the Curriculum

At Roby Park Primary School, we provide a broad and balanced curriculum which includes Religious Education (RE), Relationships Education and Health Education. These subjects help pupils develop respect, understanding, self-awareness and the knowledge they need to make informed choices as they grow. RE is compulsory in schools up to the age of 18 and Relationships Education and Health Education are compulsory for pupils in state-funded primary schools

 

Parents and carers have the legal right to request that their child is withdrawn from all or part of Religious Education. RE remains an important part of our curriculum and is taught in an inclusive, respectful and age-appropriate way. If parents or carers are considering withdrawal, we ask that they contact the Headteacher in writing so that the school can discuss the request, explain the curriculum content and agree appropriate arrangements.

At primary school, Relationships Education and Health Education are compulsory and parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from these statutory elements. Parents and carers cannot withdraw their child from any teaching that forms part of the National Curriculum for Science.

 

Primary schools may choose to teach age-appropriate sex education beyond the statutory Science curriculum. Where this takes place, parents and carers have the right to request withdrawal from non-statutory sex education lessons. Any request should be made in writing to the Headteacher, who will meet with parents or carers to discuss the request, clarify the content being taught and consider the best interests of the child.

 

The Department for Education statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education was updated in December 2025, with revised guidance published for introduction from 1 September 2026. Roby Park Primary School have reviewed its policies and curriculum in line with the latest statutory guidance and legal requirements.
