We are delighted to welcome you to Year 4 at Roby Park Primary School. Our team is passionate about creating a happy, inclusive and engaging learning environment where every child feels valued, supported and inspired to achieve their best.

 

Mr Swatman: Class Teacher

Mr Swatman brings a calm, relaxed and approachable style to the classroom, helping children feel confident, comfortable and ready to learn. As a team, we value positive relationships and create exciting learning experiences that encourage curiosity, independence and a love of learning.

 

Mr Swatman is particularly passionate about Outdoor Play and Learning and enjoys giving children opportunities to explore, investigate and develop new skills beyond the classroom. We believe that outdoor experiences help children build confidence, resilience and teamwork while developing a deeper connection with the world around them.

 

Mrs Tucker: Class Teaching Assistant, SEND Support and Forest School Practitioner

Mrs Tucker is adaptable, inclusive and supportive, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate, progress and succeed. Through her expertise in SEND support and Forest School, she helps us create engaging and accessible learning experiences that meet a wide range of needs.

 

Mrs Tucker also plays an important role in our residential trips and enjoys encouraging children to take part in the performing arts and other memorable school experiences.

 

Mrs McAdam: Class Teaching Assistant

Mrs McAdam is known for her kind, caring and supportive approach. She helps children feel happy, confident and valued within the classroom and builds positive relationships that support their learning and wellbeing.

 

Mrs McAdam takes great pride in helping children develop new skills, grow in confidence and reach their full potential. As a team, we love seeing children learn, flourish and grow throughout their time at school.

 

Miss Mawdsley: Class Teaching Assistant

Miss Mawdsley brings a calm and friendly approach to our classroom. She helps us create a warm and welcoming environment where children feel safe, happy and supported.

 

Miss Mawdsley enjoys building positive relationships with children and helping them feel confident and comfortable in school. She takes great pride in supporting children’s wellbeing and ensuring they enjoy their learning experiences.

 

Miss Milburn: One-to-One Teaching Assistant

Miss Milburn is calm, patient and always willing to offer a listening ear. She supports children both academically and emotionally, helping them build confidence and develop greater independence.

 

Her creative and flexible approach helps us make learning enjoyable, meaningful and accessible, ensuring that children receive the support they need to succeed.

 

Together, we create a nurturing classroom where children feel safe to take risks, challenge themselves and celebrate their achievements. Throughout the year, children can look forward to exciting learning opportunities, creative projects, outdoor experiences, wellbeing activities and plenty of fun.

 

We look forward to sharing a fantastic year of learning, growth and success with every child.

 

Our Teaching Approach

In Year 4, we want children to feel confident, motivated and excited about their learning. We set high expectations while providing a supportive and nurturing classroom where children feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and trying again.

 

We encourage children to become increasingly independent, take responsibility for their learning and develop the resilience needed to overcome challenges. Our lessons are purposeful, engaging and varied, providing opportunities for children to think, discuss, investigate and apply their learning in different ways.

 

We use practical activities, problem-solving tasks and real-life experiences to help children make meaningful connections across the curriculum. We believe children learn best when they are actively involved, curious and encouraged to think for themselves.

 

We are passionate about developing strong reading and writing skills. We support children to become confident, enthusiastic readers and thoughtful, creative writers. We also help children deepen their mathematical understanding and become confident problem-solvers who can explain their thinking and apply their knowledge in different contexts.

 

Across the curriculum, we encourage children to ask questions, share their ideas and develop a genuine curiosity about the world around them. Above all, we want every child to recognise their individual strengths and feel proud of their progress.

 

We celebrate all achievements, whether big or small, and encourage children to recognise and celebrate the successes of others. Our aim is to help every child develop the confidence, independence and skills they need to thrive.

 

What Children Can Look Forward To

Year 4 is an exciting year filled with new learning, memorable opportunities and rewarding challenges. Children will continue to develop their independence and become increasingly responsible members of our school community. We encourage them to take greater ownership of their learning and approach new challenges with confidence, perseverance and resilience.

 

In English, children will explore a wide range of engaging and challenging texts. They will develop their reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary while discussing characters, themes and authors’ choices. Children will also write for different purposes and audiences, learning to organise their ideas, select effective vocabulary and create interesting and engaging pieces of writing.

 

In mathematics, children will build on their understanding of number and develop confidence when working with larger numbers, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals. They will solve increasingly challenging problems, explain their reasoning and make connections between different areas of mathematical learning.

 

Across the wider curriculum, children will explore exciting topics in science, history, geography, art, design and technology, computing, music, physical education and other subjects. They will be encouraged to investigate new ideas, ask thoughtful questions and discover their individual interests and talents.

 

Children will also enjoy opportunities to learn beyond the classroom through practical investigations, creative projects, outdoor learning, educational visits and special experiences. These opportunities will help them apply their knowledge, work collaboratively and create lasting memories with their classmates.

 

Our Classroom Environment

We provide a classroom where children feel happy, safe, respected and valued. We want Year 4 to be a place where everyone feels that they belong and where children are confident to share their ideas, have a go and learn from their experiences.

 

We encourage children to work collaboratively, listen to different viewpoints and show kindness and respect towards one another. As they become more mature learners, children are given opportunities to take on responsibilities within the classroom and develop the independence and organisational skills that will prepare them for the next stages of their school journey.

 

Our classroom is a positive and encouraging environment where effort, perseverance and progress are recognised and celebrated. We help children understand that mistakes are an important part of learning and that challenges provide valuable opportunities to improve.

 

Most importantly, we want every child to leave the classroom feeling proud of what they have achieved, excited by what they have learned and ready to take on their next challenge.

 

PE

Y4 have PE on Thursday. Children wear their complimentary Roby Park PE kit to school – white logo tshirt, navy joggers and jacket. In the warmer months, children may want to wear their burgundy shorts.

 

Reading Books

Children are allocated multiple books weekly on Rising Stars Reading Planet as well as a physical book which is changed weekly, linked to their stage of Reading. Physical books are changed every Thursday. We expect children to read for 10 minutes every night and then to complete the end of book comprehension quiz online when they come to the end of their book. You can access Reading Planet here.

 

Home Learning

• Children are to read for 10 minutes per night and bring their reading log in everyday, signed by an adult.
• Children can complete 20 minutes of  times tables and division challenges on Times Table Rockstars.
• Children have 10/14 Junior Duke challenges to complete across the academic year. Children have their completed challenges signed off at their half termly Juniior Duke meetings.
