Meet the Team

Welcome to Year 2 at Roby Park Primary School. Our class is led by Miss McLaughlin, supported by our class teaching assistant, Miss Bligh, and our dedicated one-to-one support staff, Miss Slater, Miss Ford and Miss Dwerryhouse.

We are delighted to be part of your child’s learning journey. Together, we provide a positive, inclusive and nurturing environment that encourages curiosity, independence and resilience. We have high expectations for every child and celebrate effort, progress and achievement in all areas of school life.

Miss Bligh: Class Teaching Assistant

Miss Bligh is a kind and supportive teaching assistant who helps to make learning positive, engaging and enjoyable. She ensures that every child feels happy, valued and supported throughout their learning journey.

Miss Bligh is passionate about yoga and mindfulness and leads weekly yoga sessions in school. These sessions help children to build resilience, develop positive coping strategies and strengthen relationships. Her calm and caring approach enables her to support children both academically and emotionally, helping them to be the very best they can be.

Miss Slater: One-to-One Support

Miss Slater provides individual support to help children access their learning and achieve their full potential. Her friendly, patient and positive approach helps her to build strong relationships and create a supportive learning environment.

Alongside her one-to-one role, Miss Slater enjoys working with other children across the class and contributes to an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels encouraged, valued and able to succeed.

Miss Ford: One-to-One Support

Miss Ford provides dedicated one-to-one support while also enjoying being involved in the wider life of our class. Her calm, steady and patient approach helps children feel safe, understood and ready to learn.

Whether a child is finding a task challenging, feeling overwhelmed or simply needs someone to listen, Miss Ford is always ready to guide, encourage and celebrate every step of progress. She helps us create a safe space where children feel supported and confident enough to keep trying.

Miss Dwerryhouse: One-to-One SEND Support

Miss Dwerryhouse is a warm and welcoming member of our team who provides dedicated one-to-one SEND support. She helps us create a happy, safe and nurturing environment where children feel confident and excited to learn.

Through her positive and encouraging approach, Miss Dwerryhouse helps children overcome barriers and celebrates every milestone, whether academic, social or emotional.

Our Teaching Approach

In Year 2, we combine high expectations with a nurturing and supportive approach. We encourage children to challenge themselves, develop greater independence and take pride in their achievements, while ensuring that they always feel safe, valued and supported.

We make learning engaging, interactive and enjoyable through practical activities, purposeful discussion and opportunities to explore. We encourage children to develop their curiosity, confidence and love of learning because we believe children learn best when they are happy, supported and feel a strong sense of belonging.

We are passionate about helping children develop firm foundations in reading and writing. We provide opportunities for children to become increasingly fluent readers, explore a wide range of texts and communicate their ideas effectively through writing.

We are equally passionate about mathematics and help children to develop confidence, fluency and enthusiasm in their mathematical learning. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, explore different approaches and apply their knowledge when solving practical and real-life problems.

Wherever possible, we take learning beyond the classroom and use our outdoor environment to provide engaging, hands-on experiences. Through interactive and practical activities, we encourage participation, teamwork and creativity, helping to make learning meaningful and memorable.

Above all, we recognise every child as an individual. We celebrate their unique strengths and achievements and support them to reach their full potential.

What Children Can Look Forward To

We are excited to welcome children into Year 2, where they will continue to grow as confident and independent learners, discover new talents and approach new challenges with pride and resilience.

Throughout the year, children will enjoy reading longer and more varied books while developing their fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. They will create stories, descriptions, letters and reports, learning to organise their ideas and make thoughtful choices about the language they use.

In mathematics, children will build their confidence with addition and subtraction and further develop their understanding of number. They will strengthen their reasoning and problem-solving skills through practical tasks and challenging real-life activities.

Year 2 also offers many exciting and memorable experiences, including Forest School sessions, educational visits, practical science investigations and engaging workshops. These opportunities help children apply their knowledge, explore their interests and develop important skills beyond the classroom.

Children will take on increasing levels of responsibility and become positive role models for our younger pupils. They will also have opportunities to participate in performances, including the Nativity, and enjoy OPAL afternoons with their families.

We aim to make Year 2 a happy, rewarding and memorable year filled with learning, friendship and adventure.

Our Classroom Environment

In Year 2, we create a warm, welcoming and inclusive classroom where every child feels valued, supported and encouraged to achieve their best. We provide a safe environment in which children feel confident to ask questions, share ideas, take appropriate risks and learn from their mistakes.

Through engaging, practical and creative experiences, we nurture curiosity, independence and a genuine love of learning. We encourage children to work collaboratively, listen to others and show kindness and respect.

Children are supported to develop resilience and understand that effort, perseverance and mistakes are all important parts of the learning process. We celebrate individual achievements while encouraging children to recognise and celebrate the successes of their classmates.

Most importantly, we want every child to feel happy, confident and excited to come to school each day, knowing that they belong, their contributions matter and they are capable of achieving great things.

PE

Y2 have PE on Wednesday. Children wear their complimentary Roby Park PE kit to school – white logo tshirt, navy joggers and jacket. In the warmer months, children may want to wear their burgundy shorts.

Children are allocated multiple books weekly on Rising Stars Reading Planet as well as a physical book which is changed weekly, linked to their stage of Reading. Physical books are changed every Wednesday. We expect children to read for 10 minutes every night and then to complete the end of book comprehension quiz online when they come to the end of their book. You can access Reading Planet here.
