Reception
Meet the Team
Welcome to Reception at Roby Park Primary School. Our Reception class is led by Miss Murphy, who is supported by our teaching assistant, Mrs Taberner. Together, we are excited to be part of your child’s learning journey and look forward to helping every child settle into school, develop confidence and become a happy, independent learner.
Mrs Taberner is a kind and caring teaching assistant with a particular passion for supporting children’s phonics development. We make phonics fun and interactive through practical activities, games and opportunities for children to learn through movement and play. Mrs Taberner also has a love of outdoor learning and enjoys creating exciting challenges across our provision, from the water-play area to the builders’ area. Her favourite story is The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr, which she enjoys sharing with the children during story time.
As a Reception team, we are committed to building strong, positive relationships with every child. We provide a fun, welcoming and nurturing learning environment where children feel safe, valued and inspired to reach their full potential.
Our Teaching Approach
Our teaching approach is calm, nurturing and responsive to the individual needs of every child. We place a strong emphasis on developing children’s communication and language skills, ensuring that each child feels listened to, safe and secure.
We believe children learn best when they are happy, engaged and confident enough to explore new experiences. Our learning is practical, interactive and carefully planned to capture children’s interests, develop their curiosity and make learning enjoyable.
We encourage independence, promote positive social skills and support children to become confident, resilient and considerate individuals. We celebrate every child’s achievements, whether big or small, and help them to feel proud of their progress.
We are also passionate about developing children’s early mathematical understanding. Through practical activities, physical games and outdoor learning, we help children build secure early number skills and develop a positive attitude towards mathematics.
What Can Children Look Forward To
In Reception, children can look forward to a wide range of exciting and memorable learning experiences. We place a strong focus on the three prime areas of learning: communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, and physical development.
Children will enjoy exploring, playing games, sharing stories, singing, dancing, being active and taking on new challenges. They will also begin to develop the key reading, writing and mathematical skills that will provide a strong foundation for their future learning.
Throughout the year, children will take part in many new experiences, including Forest School activities and performing in our Reception Nativity. These opportunities help children to explore the world around them, develop new skills, build resilience and create special memories with their friends.
We support children in learning the routines, behaviours and skills they need to become increasingly independent. Our aim is to ensure that every child develops a love of learning and feels confident and prepared for the next stage of their school journey.
Our Classroom Environment
We provide a calm, welcoming and inclusive learning environment where every child is encouraged to explore, create, communicate and develop positive relationships.
Our indoor classroom includes a wide range of stimulating learning areas and high-quality resources. These areas allow children to follow their interests, practise new skills, use their imagination and learn through purposeful play. The classroom also provides a safe and nurturing space where children can build friendships and develop the skills they need for school life.
Our exciting outdoor area provides further opportunities for children to investigate, problem-solve and learn through active play. Children can develop their fine and gross motor skills while learning to collaborate, communicate, create and socialise with others.
Across both our indoor and outdoor provision, we carefully plan activities and challenges that allow every child to thrive, grow in confidence and experience success.
Reception Baseline
All children starting in Reception will be participating in the reception baseline assessment (RBA) within the first 6 weeks of starting reception. The purpose of the assessment is to provide the starting point for a new measure that will help parents understand how well schools support their pupils to progress between reception and year 6 / the end of key stage 2.
It is a short (approximately 20 minutes), practical assessment focusing on their early literacy, communication, language and mathematics skills. A teacher will carry out the assessment one-to-one with each pupil, any time within the first 6 weeks of Reception. It does not require any preparation at home or at school, and will help teachers to understand what their pupils can do at the beginning of their time here at Roby Park. It is important to note that this is not a pass or fail assessment and the results will not be published. It will be used to inform us of your child’s next steps in learning.

PE
Reception have PE on Monday. Children wear their complimentary Roby Park PE kit to school – white logo tshirt, navy joggers and jacket. In the warmer months, children may want to wear their burgundy shorts.
Reading Books
Children are allocated multiple books weekly on Rising Stars Reading Planet as well as a physical book which is changed weekly, linked to their stage of Reading. Physical books are changed every Monday. We expect children to read for 10 minutes every night and then to complete the end of book comprehension quiz online when they come to the end of their book. You can access Reading Planet here.
